Unbeknownst to me, this was the first issue where the title returned to a ‘monthly format’, as it was a ‘weekly’ from 601-642.
What was great was that although all I knew of Supes was the various cartoons and movies, this issue quickly yet gently plops you in all the action.
Also, it didn’t hurt that the art was nice, crisp and fresh – realistic if you will (props go out to both Mr. George Perez and Mr. Brett Breeding --- Additional props go out to the 7-Eleven in north El Monte, CA that had this issue I picked up while biking 5 miles from my house!).
Fun Issue! Only bad thing? It ended in a cliff-hanger, and I wouldn’t pick up the next issue till around 3 or so years later! Ahahahah!!
Side note for those that don’t know: I imagine part of the appeal of the cover is due to its inspiration: the cover of Superman #1 from June 1939 by his co-creator, Mr. Joe Shuster:
Cut to nowadays: well after years of being away from the funnies due to college, work, etc., I’ve been able to resume buying (thanks in part to the wife in supporting my ‘vice’ heheheh), and will post both small reviews and updates on my readings as well as other entertaining items I run across, be it music, animation, TV/Film….thanks – holla!
